At its inaugural meeting in December 2024, the APPG on Immigration Detention agreed to seek a meeting with the new Minister for Border Security and Asylum, Dame Angela Eagle MP.
The meeting took place on 12 March 2025 in the House of Commons. It was attended by Dame Angela, Bell Ribeiro-Addy MP (APPG Chair), Baroness Lister of Burtersett (APPG Member), Baroness Ludford (APPG Member), Elspeth Macdonald (APPG Secretariat) and two Home Office officials.
During the discussion, APPG members raised various issues of interest and concern. These included Home Office plans to expand the immigration detention estate, Alternatives to Detention, implementation of the Brook House Inquiry’s recommendations, and detention-related aspects of the Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill 2025.
The APPG is grateful to the Minister for her time and willingness to engage with the group, and to her team for facilitating the meeting. The group looks forward to holding further such meetings in the future.
