On Tuesday 8 February 2022, the APPG held an online meeting to update members on the ongoing situation at Napier Barracks and share information from members’ recent visit to the site.

The meeting was also an opportunity to share what is known so far about the government’s proposed new asylum accommodation centres. Set to house up to 8,000 people, the government has confirmed that the centres may be modelled on Napier.

Over 60 participants attended the meeting, including 8 parliamentarians. Other participants included experts by experience, campaigners, lawyers, and representatives from relevant NGOs and inspectorates.

Speakers included:

  • Erfan – former resident at Napier Barracks
  • Kenan – former resident at Penally Camp
  • Naomi Blackwell – Detention Outreach Manager, Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) UK
  • Maddie Harris – Director and Founder, Humans for Rights Network
  • APPG members who took part in the visit to Napier
