In July 2025, the APPG conducted a visit to Harmondsworth Immigration Removal Centre (IRC) located near Heathrow Airport.
The APPG’s visit was organised in response to HM Inspectorate of Prisons’ 2024 report on Harmondsworth IRC, which described finding the “the worst” conditions inspectors had ever seen in UK immigration detention at the centre and “a level of chaos…that was truly shocking”. The group was therefore keen to understand how the Home Office and current Harmondsworth contractor Mitie have responded to the HMIP’s findings.
The visit was attended by APPG Chair Bell Ribeiro-Addy MP and APPG member Baroness Lister of Burtersett. The itinerary included discussions with people detained at the centre, senior Home Office officials and contractor staff, and a tour of key facilities. Prior to the visit, both the Chair and Baroness Lister were also briefed by Bail for Immigration Detainees, JRS UK, and Medical Justice regarding NGOs’ current key concerns at the facility.
