Fifteen members of the APPG have written to the Home Secretary today, highlighting the urgent need and opportunity for change in the UK immigration detention system.
The letter raises points discussed in a meeting last month on the Adults at Risk in Immigration Detention (AAR) policy. It highlights serious concerns, in particular around the government’s response to the recent annual inspection of the AAR policy, carried out by the Independent Chief Inspector of Borders and Immigration. It also notes the group’s continued concern for those people who remain in detention despite the Covid-19 pandemic and reiterates its previous calls for their immediate release.
But the letter also explains how the current crisis has created opportunities for positive change. It urges the Home Secretary to take this chance to rethink its approach on detention and change course for the better.
